Hard-Pressed

Hard-Pressed

2 Corinthians 4: 8-9
8 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed—

Reading other translations of this passage, I found in The Message – “We’ve been surrounded and battered by troubles, but we’re not demoralized; we’re not sure what to do, but we know that God knows what to do; we’ve been spiritually terrorized, but God hasn’t left our side; we’ve been thrown down, but we haven’t broken.”
When the sailors of the sailing ship days faced bad storms, they would call out to encourage one another.  They would say, “Hold fast.”  When the waves smashed against the side of the ship and washed over the decks and the winds howled around them and lightning cracked overhead and it seemed like everything was against them, they would encourage each other with, “hold fast.”
Paul calls to us in our storms with a similar cry.  In Ephesians 6:14a says, “Stand therefore.”  He writes to us to be prepared for opposition from the devil.  He tells us to put on spiritual armor and describes what and how to put it on.  Then he says that when you’ve done what you can do to stand up to the devil to stand therefore.
You’ve gotten ready for a fight and now is the time to be prepared for that fight.  You’ve gone through all that you needed to do to be ready to fight so expect the fight to come.  The enemy does not want to see us marching into battle and will try to hit us before we can do damage to his kingdom.  And if you’ve already begun working to tell the Gospel then the enemy will move against you.  This is a surety.  You’re actively working against him so he will strike back.  So when you’re done everything to stand, stand therefore.
But take heart; even though our enemy walks around like a roaring lion seeking who he can devour, we are in the army of the Lion of the tribe of Judah.  The enemy will show his teeth and he will try to frighten you with his fierce roar.  You will think you’re about to be attacked by a wild lion.  But he only has the power over you that you allow him to have.  You are not a helpless victim waiting to be consumed by this wild beast.  You are marching side-by-side with the real Lion and as long as you stay by His side you are safe.  This does not mean the devil won’t throw a swipe at you with his claws, it means you can withstand his attacks as long as you remember who you are in Christ and pray and stay with Him.  In other words:  now that you’ve done all to stand, stand therefore.
Look at this passage from 2 Corinthians again.  We have the promise of “but not” from God.  No matter how strong the attack that we face, God says, “but not.”  “But not crushed, but not in despair, but not forsaken, but not destroyed.”  God never promises “but not attacked, but not tried, but not tested,” He says we will come through these things.  No matter what we face, not matter how difficult the storms of life, it will not last forever:  we will be preserved by God’s grace.  We are not destined to be defeated, we are destined to win in Christ.

The Holy Spirit – God’s Spinach

The Holy Spirit – God’s Spinach

Acts 1:8
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Remember Popeye the Sailor Man?  Popeye would often run into problems, especially with his arch enemy Brutus. But Popeye always had his secret weapon with him that enabled him to overcome any problem – that secret weapon was his spinach!  It didn’t matter how big the challenge was Popeye would eat his spinach and he could overcome anything.
We Christians are a lot like Popeye.  We face problems and challenges much bigger than we are.  And we have an enemy who looks big and tough and scary.  But, just like Popeye, we have a source of power.  Our source of power is from on high and if we can just keep ourselves filled with this, we will conquer what may come against us in our lives and ministry.  What is the source of our power?  The Holy Spirit!
More than 100 years ago the Lord God began a fresh outpouring of his Holy Spirit at an old, dilapidated building on Azusa Street in Los Angeles.  This revival brought a fresh focus on the work and on the Person of the Holy Spirit.  God is Building His church under the New Covenant and He is doing it through redeemed, born again, and Spirit filled men and women.
The power of the Holy Spirit can change your life and ministry.   We usually don’t think about power unless something needs to be done.  And we really only think about power until we lack it.  Ask someone whose power has been out for a few days because of a storm.  They will let you know not having power is not a good thing.  But we as Christians do not have to live without power.  We can tap into the power of God Almighty!  He not only gives natural power, he gives us spiritual power to live a spiritual life and fulfill our spiritual purposes.
We cannot accomplish our Purpose to be what God has called us to be or do what God has called us to do without the power of the Holy Spirit.  We will be woefully lacking if we try to accomplish this under our own power.  We have no power to live for Him because of our sinful nature.  We might try to turn over a new leaf.  We might try to reform ourselves. But we can’t change our nature on our own.  We need the power of the Holy Spirit to enable us to live lives pleasing to God.  We must be born again!  We must be regenerated!  Then we receive a new nature and a new heart and then the Holy Spirit can empower us and we can minister to a lost and hurting world.
The devil doesn’t want a powerful church.  He can handle man in his own power.  But he must yield to the one who comes ministering in the power of God.  Like Popeye, we are “strong to the finich ‘cause we eats our spinach.”  When we allow the Holy Spirit to fill us – when we pray and allow God’s Spirit to come into our hearts then we become strong and powerful and able to fulfill our purpose in ministry.
Prayer allows us right into the very Presence of God.  We have access to the Holy of Holies.  God our Father hears our prayers.  Use this advantage!  God listens to your prayers so pray!

Take a Leap of Faith

Take a Leap of Faith

Luke 17:5-6
5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”
6 So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

I learned an interesting scientific fact:  The African Impala (antelope) are amazing creatures.  During jumps they have been measured to attain ten feet in height and land thirty feet from where they began.  Yet I’ve seen impalas in zoos inside enclosures with short fences.  Why don’t they just getting a running start and leap over the enclosure fence?  The answer is simple; impalas will not jump if they can't see where their feet will land.
I have a lot in common with those impalas.  I can make great leaps in faith as long as I can see where I’m going to land.  But I don’t like to leap if I don’t know where I’m going to land.
A nineteenth century evangelist in England named George Mueller said of faith, "Faith does not operate in the realm of the possible.  There is no glory for God in that which is humanly possible.  Faith begins where man's power ends."
    Putting that in Biblical language,
In Biblical terms: Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Exercising true faith means that sometimes we have to leap when we can’t see the landing area.  Sometimes we have to leap in faith and trust that we’ll land where God has planned for us to land.  I have leapt on occasion, with much fear and trembling, and those have been some of the best times of my life.  Scary, but rewarding times.
How about you?  Is there something in your life you really need to change?  Maybe it’s a loved one / co-worker / close friend who needs to get saved and you’re waiting for God to send someone to tell them the Gospel.  (Maybe God sent you and you’re just not doing what you need to do.)  Maybe it’s some addiction you need to get authority over.  It could be smoking, drinking, sex, gambling, over-eating, whatever.  You can do nothing and nothing will change or leap in faith and determine to kick the habit and pray and seek help and let God help you.  Or maybe there is something in your church not getting done and you’re waiting for God to tell someone to do the work.  (Maybe it’s you who needs to roll up your sleeves and get to work.)  We all have areas in our lives where we can do more but we sit in our pew and be comfortable doing nothing.
Step out!  Leap!  It’s a given that if you do nothing then nothing in your life will change.  Stop talking yourself out of stepping out in faith.  Remember, Biblical faith begins where our ability ends.  God’s power is made manifest in our weakness.  What is faith?  It’s the substance or the manifestation or the reality of the things we hope for.  Faith is God’s evidence of what we can’t see.  No great work of God’s Kingdom is done on our strength.  Great works are done by leaping out in faith.  By leaping to someplace where we can’t see where our feet will land.  Faith is taking the leap and expecting that God will make a good landing zone for us where one does not now exist.  Faith is not logical.  Faith goes against the wisdom of the world.  Faith is taking risks in a world where people expect to be safe and comfortable from cradle to grave.  Faith is not comfortable.  Faith is not being satisfied with “life as usual.”
In the coming year, exercise your faith and see where your feet end up landing.

One Word Resolution Year 3

One Word Resolution
Year 3

Daniel 1:8
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

In January 2012, I decided to limit my resolution to just one word, “Trust.”  I wanted to trust God more and that year went through many things that tested my faith.  Yet through everything, I felt God was with me and I learned a lot about faith.
In January 2013 I chose a new word, “Embrace.”  I wanted to embrace my relationship with God more.  Last year saw changes beginning with a new church and a new pastor.  And God answered my request by revealing many things to me; some I already knew but never embraced, and some new ones.  His Spirit guided me through some rewarding Bible studies including First and Second Thessalonians, the book of Acts and finally the Prophet Jeremiah.
So now we are in January 2014 and I decided to choose another word and this year chose the word, “Purposed.”  This is from Daniel 1:8 where Daniel, new to captivity in Babylon, was ordered to conform to the King’s wishes and live the lifestyle of a Babylonian.  But Daniel “purposed,” or determined, in his heart that he would not conform to the world around him but wanted to keep himself true to his convictions and serve God according to the Scriptures.  He felt that conforming to the Babylonian lifestyle would defile his life and compromise his beliefs.  As we read his story we know he was granted favor with the King even while keeping himself faithful to God.  God blessed his life and granted him much grace.
There are so many temptations in the world around us and we are faced with choices.  We can choose to live with the world’s junk in our lives or we can choose to keep ourselves separate and live lives according to the precepts written in the Bible.
I don’t live a secret life of sin and wild living, but I know there are things where I can, and should, live more holy.  There are areas in my life where the line between God’s Word and the world get a little blurred.  I have purposed in my heart to examine my life and find those areas.
The concept of a one-word resolution may not work for you, but certainly the new year is a good time to step back and look at your life and ask yourself if you’re living a life pleasing to God.  We look at the New Year as a time of renewal, so why not renew some area of your spiritual life?  Tackle a new Bible study or set aside some time for more prayer.  Volunteer someplace to help the needy or help out at your church.  Find some way to get out of your comfortable pew and stretch your life a little.  It’s a New Year and there’s no better time to begin than now.
